As humans we love routine, we are creatures of habit. Once we find something we like, we usually stick to it. Whether it’s going to the same class at the gym, using the same treadmill or running the same route everyday.
Habituation is a decrease in response to a stimulus after repeated exposure to the same stimulus.
Our bodies are extremely complex and are made to adapt to various stimulus including exercise. At the beginning of a new workout routine things are hard, but as you continue and remain consistent your body begins to adapt making things easier and easier as time goes on. This becomes the new ‘normal’. And while we as humans enjoy the comfort of this now easy routine, how happy are our bodies and our brains?
Recently I challenged myself and I went to a beginners calisthenics workshop. I done things I’ve never done before, and I done things I doubted I’d ever be able to do (and I may have nearly killed a coach or two along the way.. my bad The above picture is me attempting to do the crow pose which prior to the workshop I’d never done – and while it’s not perfect (who is?!) I challenged myself and my body and broke my routine! Since the workshop I’ve been including what I learned into my own current routine. I’m using muscles I’ve been neglecting, I’m doing things I thought impossible and I’m challenging not only my body but my brain – and it feels AMAZING!
Do the impossible, confuse your muscles, challenge your brain, break your routine!
