It’s not me… it’s you!
What do you look for in a relationship? Ultimately, the qualities you choose in a potential partner will determine whether or not your relationship will work. If you are someone who is adventurous and loves going travelling to exotic places and you date someone whose worst nightmare is leaving their hometown chances are in the long term that relationship won’t work out!
Whether you have a list as long as your arm or a few small qualities you look for it’s important you take the same approach you do with dating as you do with choosing a Personal Trainer – you both need to ‘click’ in order to have a successful partnership!
Just as dating can be overwhelming so can searching for a Personal Trainer, especially when you have never had one before. If you are thinking of getting a Personal Trainer but don’t know what to look for – let me help you!
1) Qualifications: This is the single most important thing you need to look for! Are they qualified? This can be easily checked by making sure they are on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) and the National Register of Personal Trainers (NRPT). These registers provide a guarantee that fitness professionals on its books meet required standards and possess acceptable qualifications. If someone isn’t registered walk away!
2) Budget: I’m sure we would all love to blow our paychecks on whatever we feel like instead of on bills and rent! But unfortunately many of us can’t afford to do that! It is important to check costs at the beginning so you don’t end up wanting a Personal Trainer you can’t afford!
3) Training Style: This is very important – every Personal Trainer has a unique training style. If you and your Personal Trainer’s training styles don’t match – it will not work! If your Personal Trainer’s style is a drill sergeant who shouts at his clients and shows tough love to push them through sessions and you are someone who needs more of a cheerleader than a drill sergeant you will hate your sessions! Discuss with your Trainer training styles before signing up.
4) Genuine: Do they have your best interest at heart or are they after some quick cash? If you tell your trainer you want to increase muscle strength but they have you doing HITT every session you need to question whether they just pushing a generic programme rather than a bespoke programme for you – remember it’s PERSONAL training
Above all, trust your gut! You need to make sure you feel comfortable with this person – you both will be spending a lot of time together. And at the end of the day it’s a service you are paying for, make sure you spend your money wisely!
